Maria is Senior Lecturer in innovation in the School of Management and Marketing. She has research experience working with marginalised social groups in developing countries, such as Colombia and Brazil, their entrepreneurial activities in the informal economy, and the role of social enterprises/social innovations in supporting ‘sustainable enterprising at human scale’. Maria has been studying the case of marginalised waste pickers in Colombia, their formalisation process and has supported and informed the development of public policy to support this social group. More recently, Maria secured funding from the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust to explore the struggles of Venezuelans migrants in the Colombian informal economy working as waste pickers to inform policy and practice.
